As Instacart’s Food Safety and Regulatory Lead, you’ll work closely with Instacart’s operations, support, business development, product and engineering and legal teams to build the processes and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant food safety and other regulations and a great customer experience. You will help create industry standards for food safety in the grocery delivery space through the development of scalable operational processes and improvements within our services. You’ll also be responsible for researching relevant legal requirements to ensure company practices are in compliance in the United States and Canada, as well as future international markets.
You’ll need to be proactive and engaged, able to work well cross-functionally both internally and externally, excited about technology and e-commerce, able to navigate complexity and ambiguity, and ready to roll your sleeves up and dig into tough problems to reach pragmatic and workable solutions. You will need to be an effective advocate of Instacart and our food safety and regulatory compliance practices to external parties.

What You’ll Be Doing
Be the primary point of contact within the company for all food safety issues, whether with retailer partners, regulators, or other relevant parties
Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure food safety considerations are incorporated in the development of new product features
Handle, monitor and supervise any issues related to food safety
Monitor international, federal, state and local food safety requirements and effectively translate those into Instacart’s operational model
Provide training and education related to food safety to other parts of the company
Build out the food safety and regulatory compliance function, including managing and developing the career of our Compliance Analyst
Oversee processes and procedures for product recalls
Assist with other regulatory compliance and community safety initiatives and projects beyond food safety
Build lasting relationships with key members of local Health Departments, USDA, FDA, OSHA, and other international regulatory and legal enforcement bodies as required.
What You Should Already Have
BS or BA from accredited university required
A minimum of 5 years of experience working in food safety, relevant experience in grocery retail or e-commerce a plus
Self-starter with good judgment and the ability to effectively prioritize amongst competing objectives
Strong organizational and communication (both oral and written) skills
Ability to conceptualize, present and advocate for changes to internal and external workflows
Experience working with local food safety regulators
Self-motivated, resourceful, and thrives in a fast-moving startup environment
Based in Bay Area a plus, with occasional travel including internationally
What Would Be Good to Have
Familiarity with grocery retailer-related regulations (e.g. weights and measures)
Knowledge of SQL, Zendesk or similar help-desk tools, and collaboration tools such as Quip and Asana is helpful
