The function of this position is to oversee the quality system as it applies to laboratory operations and the performance of professional chemical and microbiological testing of food products and environmental samples for all Food Safety Net Services. facilities. This position is responsible for application and evaluation of approved microbiological and chemical techniques and methodologies used in analysis of food products and has the authority to carry out these tasks, as well as to ensure their compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 guide for food testing laboratories. This position will have frequent contact with all Quality Assurance personnel as well as review, reporting, and interpretation of laboratory quality control records in all areas of the facility. This position works closely with assisting in the daily functions associated with the maintenance of the quality system and has the authority to halt laboratory testing in the case of non-compliant quality control issues.
Manage all aspects of the network-wide QMS to include the development, execution and results review of a network proficiency program. Promotes a Culture of Quality and champions efforts to achieve Organizational Excellence
Supervise laboratory quality system operations at all Food Safety Net Services facilities to maintain ISO 17025 compliance
Independently pursue consistent review of processes, procedures, and techniques in accordance with guide ISO 17025 as they apply to the proper implementation of the Food Safety Net Services Methods Manual, Quality Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Safety Manual, and approved laboratory procedures
Oversee quality system training of new and current laboratory personnel in the practices of an accredited facility to include quality system functions, laboratory procedures, and protocols as assigned
Performs internal audits of all quality system documentation and personnel utilizing the A2LA auditor checklists for general quality system compliance, food microbiology/food chemistry, and laboratory quality system documents including methodology and work instructions
Responsible for ensuring preparedness for surveillance audits as they occur and working closely with each facility Laboratory Manager as the key contact for external auditors
This position has the authority to stop work and request sample resets as necessary
This position has the authority to perform internal audits on all parts of the quality system including documents, methodology (as it pertains to the laboratory’s Scope of Accreditation), and personnel
This position has the authority to train all employees on all parts of the quality system
With permission of laboratory management, this position has the authority to implement internal proficiency testing as necessary.
Apply aseptic/microbiological techniques in the daily workload
Apply technically sound chemical techniques in the daily workload
Accurately perform and interpret test results, notifying the Laboratory Manager of deviations
Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry issues and trends
Ensure quality monitoring in the laboratory is performed at the required frequencies
Supervise special quality system reviews and revisions as assigned
Perform other duties as assigned
This job may have supervisory responsibilities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MS degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Food Technology, or related field
ISO / IEC 17025 training strongly preferred
Hands on experience in a microbiological and chemical testing environment
2 years experience in a commercial testing laboratory
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
ASQ certification preferred
Must have experience as a thought leader or change agent in Life Sciences Quality Management
Ability to travel up to 75% of the time or as needed
