The Director of Food Safety, Quality and Regulatory will be the lead for food safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance for the company’s Distribution Centers and Retail Stores, as well as product recalls across all facilities. The Director will manage a team of FSQ professionals and recall specialists and will partner with functional peers across the company to ensure that the organization maintains food safety and quality standards across an extensive portfolio of products and complies with applicable federal and local food safety and quality regulations across all facilities.
The Director will develop and implement strategies, policies and procedures to protect the safety, quality, and integrity of products during all operations at the Distribution Centers and Retail Stores as well as transportation. The Director will oversee US Food’s corporate recall program, ensuring pro-active communications with field operations, vendors and customers and efficient and effective execution of recalls across the organization. The Director will establish key metrics to measure adherence to food safety and quality assurance requirements and recall effectiveness across the organization and identify and implement process enhancements for continuous improvement. The Director must establish strong working relationships with a variety of cross-functional teams at the corporate headquarters and in the field, across all levels of the organization, for training, implementation and enforcement of food safety, quality and regulatory requirements.
The Director has responsibilities for ongoing compliance with federal and local food safety regulations, such as FSMA and other State/Local food safety regulations for the above noted segments of the business. The Director leads the response to any regulatory inspections and will proactively solicit, build and enhance relationships with external regulatory and other bodies to bolster the company’s reputation, connections and resources in the areas of food safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Working closely with organizations such as FDA, USDA, CDC, local health departments, AFDO, IAFP, GFSI and other key organizations to foster strong, collaborative relationships with each. The Director will act as a key spokesperson and subject matter expert to the company’s customers and other stakeholders on the topics of food safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
The Director will assist with the development of labeling and product claims standards for US Food’s private label brands portfolio, ensuring that applicable products and product lines meet regulatory requirements and advertising standards (including allergens, ingredients, packaging, nutritional information, etc.).
The Director will have direct supervision over a team of approximately ten FSQA professionals and indirect supervision of key roles within the company’s Distribution Centers and Retail Stores.
The role reports to the Associate General Counsel – Product Integrity & Innovation and is part of the Legal Department.
Internal: Close collaboration across US Foods’ corporate food safety and quality functions in Supply Chain, Merchandising, Product Development, Sales, Category Management, Internal Audit, Compliance, and Legal. Strong engagement with executive and field leadership as well as teams at region, area and site levels.
External: Government regulatory agencies, GFSI, manufacturers, vendors, customers, consultants, certification bodies and third-party stakeholders.
Education/Training: Bachelor's degree in biology, science, business or similar required, graduate degree in Food Sciences or Business preferred.
Related Experience: A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in food safety, food production or food distribution and regulatory compliance required. The successful candidate will bring a well-rounded arsenal of technical expertise in a range of food safety and quality assurance topics, as evidenced by in-depth knowledge of food safety and quality control programs such as Preventive Controls for Human Food, HACCP and Seafood HACCP, Sanitation, and GFSI, and the ability to implement continuous improvement across all categories of food safety, quality and regulatory. Candidate must demonstrate experience in risk assessment and the development of practical food safety programs with consideration for business needs, and experience with a wide variety of distribution platforms is preferred. Must be HACCP and PCQI certified. Prior supervisory experience required.

Candidate must possess strong business acumen and provide valued counsel and business perspective to food safety and quality groups, vendor relations teams, supply chain managers, operations teams and brand managers across all levels of the organization. Must possess strong people skills and be able to establish credibility rapidly with key internal partners and build strong links across the business to positively impact business performance. Externally, the candidate must bring a track record of gaining the confidence of government agencies and industry groups to ensure that positive working relationships are developed and maintained on behalf of the company. The candidate must be able to proactively engage external partners, using informal networks and their own influence within the industry to get things done. The candidate should have substantial experience in crisis management.
