Applied Microbiologist for Poultry Integrated Systems
The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) at NC State University is seeking an Applied Microbiologist and Extension Specialist for Poultry Integrated Systems. North Carolina ranks first among US States in farm cash receipts for poultry and egg production. The production of broilers, turkeys, and eggs collectively make up the largest sector (41.8% or over $5 billion) of North Carolina’s total farm income. The NC poultry industry produces over 126,933 jobs and is estimated to contribute $36.6 billion to the state’s GDP.
The Prestage Department of Poultry Science at NC State University is dedicated to supporting the poultry industry and consumers. Currently the PDPS is the only program in the world with a “mini-integration” infrastructure that enables the training of students and the pursuit of research on all aspects of the modern commercial poultry production system. The PDPS is the only institution that has a Feed Mill Educational Unit, Poultry and Egg Processing Laboratories, Chicken Education Unit, Turkey Education Unit, Poultry Teaching Unit, and Animal and Poultry Waste Management Processing Facility. The PDPS mini-integration system has the unique ability to link issues in any area of the poultry industry to factors in other area(s) of the industry. This provides PDPS with the opportunity to conduct industry relevant scenarios, collect integrated data, and provide real-world solutions.
The key duties of this faculty position are to develop an extension, research, and teaching program consistent with the needs of the North Carolina commercial poultry industry in the area of applied microbiology consistent with the individual’s area(s) of expertise. The faculty member will create a program related to microbial infections/contaminations and microbial toxins and their risks to poultry and humans, microbial agent sampling and biomapping, antimicrobial resistance among foodborne pathogens and best practices for the judicious use of antibiotics in poultry, as well as addressing the State and Federal rules and regulations governing the treatment of these animals.
The faculty member will secure extramural funding to support research and extension/outreach programs and collaborate with other departmental and University faculty to generate multidisciplinary research. The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and mentor and advise and direct graduate students. The successful candidate will have a track record of extramural funding, publications, and excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate will work closely with the commercial poultry industry as well as interact with other departmental and University faculty, NC cooperative extension service faculty, agribusiness colleagues, and representatives of government agencies.
