The salary will be for a one-year consultant contract.
APHA Press is looking for a food-related scientist with strong managerial and editing skills to oversee APHA’s flagship product (digital, print): Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products. The SMEDP Managing Editor (consultant) will work with a team of editors and authors to develop, review, and deliver content (digital, print). The candidate should have a master’s degree or higher in a food-related science (e.g., microbiology, chemistry).
Managing Editor duties and responsibilities:
Manage a team of lead editor(s), authors, and a technical committee
Work with lead editor(s) to review and finalize chapters for publication (digital, print).
Vet the quality of authors' work during the review process.
Ensure the quality of editing and formatting of all products.
Assist lead editors in building and nurturing teams of talented authors and reviewers.
Assist in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style, and tone.
Work with book production editor to ensure final work is prepared for publication.
Implement best practices, workflows, tools, and templates to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the publishing process.
Coordinate calls with the editors and the APHA Press team to provide updates.
Managing Editor qualifications and requirements:
Master’s degree or higher in chemistry, microbiology, or food-related science preferred.
Experience managing a team.
Excellent editing skills.
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office and content management systems.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Outstanding communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
